Kirby High School Sailing Team

Sailing1

The Kirby high school sailing team is a competitive sailing program supported by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club (SCYC). Our goal is to compete in Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA) regattas, which are governed by the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). ISSA governs independent and public secondary school sailing in the United States. We compete against local Bay Area high schools and as far away as San Diego.

Practices are every Saturday from August to April, and regattas (competitions) are in San Francisco and Monterey roughly once a month. Kirby sailors learn and compete on CFJ sailboats–two person, 14-foot dinghies–which college sailing teams also use in competition.

In the regattas this past fall, Kirby placed extremely well in the gold fleet of the Northern California Inter-Scholastic regattas. These are races with close to 60 boats attending, and over 120 sailors.
