Finals week and the last days of school are fast approaching. As the year-end pace quickens, we wanted to share some important details about the schedule and the events that occur that week, to prepare you for what may feel like a Class IV rapids ride.
Exam Week Schedule
The school day begins at 9 a.m. during exam week (the lobby opens at 8 a.m.) and ends at 2 p.m. (lobby closes at 4 p.m.). Lunch is served every day. The exam week schedule is as follows:
Eighth Grade Step-Up Ceremony
This lovely event starts at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25th in the Great Hall. We ask all eighth graders to arrive no later than 4:15 p.m. The ceremony is fairly short, about seventy-five minutes or less. There will be a reception in the café afterwards. Students’ attire should be casual dressy, i.e. one or two steps up from school funky, but not necessarily jacket and tie, etc. The most important thing is that students are comfortable in their expression of self for a special occasion.
Last Day of School
This fun day of closure starts at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 26th. After the business of locker clean-outs, we have an all-school meeting for the presentation of department and other awards. We then segue to our end-of-year talent show. The talent show is just for students, faculty, and staff. Yearbooks will also be distributed.
After the talent show, we walk to Harvey West Park for the Ice Cream Social. While parents sometimes attend, this celebration is designed primarily to be a student-teacher-staff occasion. Pick-up will be at the Harvey West, not at Kirby. The social ends at 3 p.m. so plan to pickup then, or earlier depending on your students’ desire to linger or not.
High School Graduation
Parents of seniors have already been informed, but for others wanting to attend, the graduation ceremony begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 27th at Peace United Church at 900 High Street. Please arrive early to avoid any competing UCSC traffic. Our parents, siblings, and grandparents of our seniors will have priority seating in the front half of the hall. For anyone else wishing to attend, please be considerate of our senior families and allow them to sit nearer their graduate.
